My paintings are a synthesis of my work as an artist and and as a graphic designer. As a painter, I love colour, texture, pattern and abstraction. As a graphic designer I love the rhythm of the written word, the underlying grid, and the visual beat of text on a page. The structured and elegant shapes of the letterforms have always appealed to me. The fact that these arbitrary and abstract symbols can be used to convey so much meaning is both mysterious and wonderful. The work is process-driven, starting with a pattern generated through collage or stencils and exploring shapes, negative space and the interplay of colours in a fluid and spontaneous way. Words repeat mantra-like to the point that they begin to disintegrate into their component shapes, creating abstract patterns.
